This was my Peugeot a little over two years ago. I was at a dead stop and got rear-ended by some jackass in a G8 doing 35+mph. Needless to say, my car got wrecked, and I got a little injured myself. And before that during high school, there was a hit & run that left my left quarter squashed, and an instance when my young dumb ass crashed the car into a curb at 45+mph during a rainstorm, leaving the frame rail bent...Each time, I poured a bunch of my savings into fixing the car. Completely stupid from a fiscal standpoint - but the car just had too much sentimental value.

This probably would have been the "end of the line" to many, but I loved my car too much. My dad bought the car new off the showroom in 1983, and it was a big part of my childhood. I remember being a little kid always wishing to grow up and drive a shiny red Peugeot like my father.

So the car sat for over a year during my freshman year of college. The summer after that, I was able to recover a bit from insurance, and won my case against the d-bag who hit me, and tried to avert all blame.

Summer of 2012 was pretty cool: not only was I able to get the car's structural damage repaired, I was able to snag an aero-kit off a Turbo model (also pretty rare) and reassemble the thing to roll around in. Albeit it was 4 or 5 different shades, I was happy as hell to have the body looking straight again. I also bought a parts car up in California Wine Country (Sonoma) and towed it home behind the family Volvo.

Long story short..a bunch of cutting and welding took place haha.

Here's a comparison from 1985 vs 2012..

Oh, and I was able to help plan and attend the 1st annual Peugeot of North America Owner's meet in the San Francisco Bay Area (Berkeley and Oakland)... While we had a very modest turnout, it caught the eye of a Jalopnik editor, and he subsequently interviewed me and featured some of the photos I took from the meet. Thanks Zac! By then, it was Septemeber and I headed back to school in Socal, during which the car sat dormant for another year, awaiting my return.

Cool comparison between my 505 and its predeseccor, the 504..

Fast-forward to this past June of 2013. Finished up the school year and was stoked to return home for the summer, where I'd be able to resume work on the Peugeot. While last summer was all about getting the car back together again, this summer was just the opposite. As soon as I got home, I started stripping the car's exterior down. Managed to get the bumpers, trim, and everything else off. Another big concern was fixing the sunroof leak, which had caused a little sketch puddle under the passenger seat.

So my dad and I tore the headliner down, and removed the sunroof assembly. I was fortunate enough to find a cool Peugeot-Saab enthusiast down in Santa Cruz, Ca, so I made the obligatory day-trip down from Alameda with my surf board, grabbed a new sunroof cable, seal, and caught some waves while I was at it. After I grabbed what I needed, I headed back home and got to dismantling the car right away.

A month and half passed and the car was ready for paint. Again, I was fortunate enough to have a friend in the BMW E30 Community who handled the remained of the car's bodywork (rust, and dent removal), as well as the paint job.

I was particularly stoked about him finding the original color code for the car, called "Rouge Amaryllis Metallic", which turned out great. The car had a really ****ty "pay 'n spray" job back in the late 90s, which wasn't even close to the original color of the car. Ecstatic, I picked up the car, and brought her home.

Back home again, I immediately started the now more careful process of resassembly. Since I had stripped most of the car down, and had the big pieces painted induvidually, it all came back together very smoothly.

Also got the help of my good bro and some pizza.

It took the rest of Labor Day weekend, but it was a Labor of Love.

"Rechristening" the car with the new badges on the boot-lid was also a great feeling.

Then finally..came the last day of reassembly.

That *first drive* in my "new" Peugeot was amazing. Took it up to my favorite roads growing up, up in the Berkeley and Oakland hills.

So here we are now - the car is almost completely reassembled. All that is left to do is to:

  • Reinstall the sunroof cassette
  • Source some silver/chrome striping for the side molding (which I already refinished)
  • Plug the side markers back in
  • Cop some Cibie Yellow Driving/Fog lights
  • Install my European Glass one-piece headlamps with some OG French yellows
  • ...and that's it on the exterior

All of this will hopefully be accomplished during Thanksgiving and winter break from school.
I'm very thankful to have a family that put up with me working on the car in front of the house, and my neighbors/HOA who didn't call the police on me this summer Very Happy

Also a big thanks to the Classic Peugeot owners community we (surprisingly to some) have. It's very close-knit, and when something like this happened to me, I received a whole lot of help from the fellow owners around California, some from across the states, and even one from New Zealand.

Hope you guys enjoy the photos...

Cheers!

I'm always surprised to see that you get all parts you need for your car. Really amazing  work did on it! That makes me think i own a moulding kit for very first kind of 505.

very nice car, and good job to repair this important accident!

I like very much american bodies of the 505, while, usually, I prefer the original type (I don't like amercans 504 for example, because of too bigs bumpers).

And with this color, your 505 is very classy! Cool
